Hartal in Rajshahi, Rangpur underway

DHAKA: BNP enforced daylong hartal in Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions demanding release of the party leaders is progressing amid stray incidents on Monday.

The main opposition party called the hartal in 16 districts of the two divisions demanding release of BNP Secretary General (in-charge) Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Self Reliant Affairs Secretary of the party, former State Minister Ruhul Quddus Talukder Dulu.

Two people including a journalist were injured in clashes between pro-hartal activists and law enforcers in Joypurhat district early hartal hours, reports our correspondent.

In Rajshahi, leaders and activists of the city BNP, led by the party’s joint secretary general Mizanur Rahman Minu, brought out a procession in support of the hartal at Shaheb Bazar.

Besides, the district unit of BNP brought out another procession led by central BNP special secretary and district BNP president Nadim Mostafa.

Huge law enforcers were seen patrolling the streets at all key points of the city to maintain law and order.

In Bogra, hartal supporters put barricade on Dhaka-Bogra highway and brought processions in the early hours.

In Thakurgaon, several vehicles were vandalized to mark hartal.

In Sirajganj, pro-hartal activists vandalised two trucks at Mirpur Moholla in the town at around 7:30.

In Rangpur, shops, business houses and educational institutions remained closed and almost all modes of vehicle except rickshaw and battery-run Easy Bike did not ply the roads.

Additional police forces have been deployed at different points of the city.

Earlier on Sunday, the hartal programme was announced through a press conference, organised by Rajshahi and Rangpur Divisional Co-ordination Committee at BNP office in Rajshahi.

Joint Secretary General of BNP M. Mijanur Rahman Minu announced the hartal programme in favour of the party. The press conference was attended, among others, Harun-ur-Rashid, Advocate Shafiqul Haque Milon, Mosaddeque Hossain Bulbul and Shamsun Naher Kazi Hena.
